Centered Awareness

Axe Raptor is having his drums restringed for the tenth time. Although Groovy is making an effort to concentrate, Tim moves in circles because he has forgotten he has feet, and Thumper drops the drumsticks as if they grow on trees.
When the town school asked the band to take part in a week’s worth of CALM activities, they looked at one another in confusion since the word ‘calm’ is not normally used when talking to the Brontos. Yet they decided to try: one theme each day, with topics like breathing, balance, awareness, and contentment. There would be no roar-offs and no panic practice, just genuine effort and maybe some patience if anyone remembered to bring it.
What could go wrong?
Rex finds out how to avoid blowing up.
The first task seemed simple: stay quiet and pay attention to what they heard. Rex tried but only managed about five seconds before whispering that the silence sounded louder than the concert crowds. Groovy told him to relax and listen. Gradually, Rex started to notice more than the quiet that had frightened him. Wind blew outside the school windows, birds tapped on the roof, Tim hummed by accident, Axe muttered about a stubborn guitar pick, and Thumper tapped a small rhythm on his leg because he forgot he wasn’t supposed to tap anything.
A change took place gradually and unmistakably. Rex stopped waiting for a sound that never came and let his shoulders lower. He became aware of his own breathing, and what had seemed like an enemy now felt peaceful. He even admitted his brain was less scrambled, which Groovy said was probably a Christmas miracle.
Axe said he would believe it whenever Rex stayed calm for over a minute, and everyone agreed that was a fair thing to ask.

And so Rex learned that quiet is not empty, and sometimes the world sounds clearer when you take a moment to listen.
