A Small Pause Can Change the Next Step

The first building day began with a problem. The supplies were missing boards, hinges, and the small wheels Axe Raptor had ordered.

Thumper had volunteered to build the book box. He promised the younger dinosaurs it would be ready by lunchtime.

Thumper’s tail began to pound the ground. Dust jumped. A stack of flowerpots rattled.

“I am going to stomp this whole thing flat and start over!” he shouted.

Luminara stepped back from the wobbling pots. “Before you decide, can you give yourself one small pause?”

Thumper folded his arms. He did not want a pause. He wanted hinges.

Still, he planted both feet and followed Luminara’s three-part pause.

First, he stopped his body. His tail wanted to keep pounding, but he held it still.

Second, he took a slow breath in and let it out even more slowly. Then he did it again.

Third, he chose his next helpful action. He could ask Axe to check on the delivery. He could use the boards they had to build the shelves.

The missing supplies were still missing, but Thumper no longer felt as if the whole project was ruined.

The book box was not finished by lunchtime. It was, however, standing safely,,and Thumper had not flattened it!

Dino Cove Takeaway
A pause does not erase the problem or the feeling. It gives you enough room to choose what happens next.

Try It: Make a Dino Pause Plan

  1. Stop: make your hands, feet, tail—or whole body—still for a moment.
  2. Breathe: take one slow breath in and a slightly longer breath out.
  3. Choose: name one safe and helpful thing you can do next, including asking for help.

Talk About It

  • What might have happened if Thumper had stomped the book box?
  • Which part of the pause helped him see more choices?
  • When could a short pause help you at school or at home?

Next week: Groovy learns that two dinosaurs can look at the same plan and notice completely different things.
